Experience

With over 70% of the World’s coral reefs under threat and over 2000 marine species listed as endangered, there is no better time to gain a better understanding of marine conservation, the challenges faced, and what we can do to make a difference.
Start this exciting program in marine conservation with the PADI Open Water SCUBA diving course (those under 15 at the time of the course will get a PADI Junior certification) and set yourself up to maximise your contribution to marine conservation during your time on the project.
During the course of this program we will be working on the Reef Check program which collects information on the biodiversity and abundance of the fish, invertebrate, and coral species. You will also work with the experts to build artificial reefs, work on a dive site clean-up, spend an afternoon cleaning the beaches of Koh Tao, and work with the locals on recycling projects on the Island to get a better understanding of their perspective and they are working on the conservation projects. You will also work on fish ID and gain an understanding on how each of these species is important to the gauging the health of our oceans. The natural calendar permitting, we might have the chance to work on some turtle research and data collection too.
Koh Tao has a large diversity of marine life and, if we get really lucky, there a chance we might see some of the Islands sharks as well!
The program is divided into two parts - The SCUBA diving course and the marine conservation internship. All days will be a combination of both aspects. Once the course is over, you can expect to do some research dives and spend more time on the conservation aspect of the program.

On arrival at Ko Samui Airport we will be picked up and transferred to the project location at Koh Tao. This is a short ferry ride away and you can expect details on which flights to book in due course.
On the agenda for today is an introduction to the work we will be doing during the course of the week and the safety briefing.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

Day 2
Dive - Theory & Practical; Orientation Open or Close

We jump right into it on our first day with a day of dive theory and practicals as well as an orientation session. Learn more about the many conservation programs being conducted on the island and the role we are going to play in them during the course of the internship program.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3
Diving - Theory & Practical Open or Close

With a firm grasp on the theory from the day before, today will be a combination of the first two confined water dives and videos on dive theory.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4
Open water dives Open or Close

This is our first foray into the open water. This is your chance to put all the diving skills we’ve learned so far to use! On these dives we get a first-hand view of the marine ecosystem and a chance to learn more about the importance of each species in maintaining the ecological balance.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5
PADI Open Water Certification Open or Close

Today we all become certified Open Water Divers with the last assessment dives and theory exam.
Later, we celebrate this achievement with an evening of working with the other volunteers on various conservation projects.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6
Recycling projects & Structure build for artificial reef Open or Close

We start our first full day on the project with two high impact, exciting projects - building structures for the artificial reefs around the island and working on a recycling project. With no recycling facilities on the Island, both these projects are absolutely vital to the health of the oceans.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7
Beach Clean & Dive Site Clean Up Open or Close

Today is another exciting day with the first half spent on a beach clean-up and the second half on a dive site clean-up. The site for the underwater clean-up changes every month and the goal of the clean-ups is to protect the reefs from structural damage and improve the condition of the beaches and dive sites.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8
Coral Watch presentation & CoralWatch Dives Open or Close

Learn more about the threat faced by coral reefs in Thailand and across the world. Like many parts of the world, the economy on Koh Tao is reliant upon our natural reef areas and the visitors they bring. This among others, is one of the primary reasons so much more effort needs to go into saving the reefs. Today we will help with research geared to understanding which corals survive better and trying to promote these for future artificial reef projects. In this way, with our changing environment we may be better suited to assist the reef in coping with the changes.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9
Departure Open or Close

The trip of a lifetime comes to an end after breakfast today. We head to the airport for our flights back home.
