This wildlife internship gives you all the exposure and right in our own backyard!
On this programme, we will be working with The Corbett Foundation in Kanha to better understand the challenges faced with conservation in the country. We will also meet and interact with various tribes that have been living in the area for 100s of years and understand their unique perspective on the wildlife and how they deal with the human-animal conflict. To round off the experience, you will also be working on various community  projects with children from local schools and on the tribal museum. 
This trip is the prefect introduction to wildlife conservation and the unique challenges faced in the Indian context.

Day 1
Arrival and transfer to Kanha Open or Close

On arrival in Raipur, you will be met by a your chaperone for the trip. We have organised group transfers from the airport to Kanha at 1pm so please ensure that your ward’s flight gets in at least a hour before that. Should that not be possible, we can help you organise an extra night at the beginning of the trip.
The drive from the airport to our lodge where will be staying for the duration of the trip is about 4.5hrs. We reach the lodge at about 5pm, check-in and then have a short introductory walk around the campus before dinner later in the evening.

Day 2
Orientation & Nature walk Open or Close

The excitement starts with our first full day on the project!
We head to the site office TCF for a brief talk and orientation session. You will be introduced to all the projects that TCF is involved in and the ones on which we will be helping out. We will also have an expert talk to us about the biodiversity of Kanha and the Central Indian Landscape.
Some of the TCF projects are right on the campus and we get started on them right after the orientation.
Flowing a lunch break, we return to the projects that we started on in the morning. Later in the evening, once the weather has cooled down a little, we head out for a nature walk and learn a little more about the area around the lodge.
After dinner we watch a film on conservation.

Day 3
Safari & Field techniques for studying wildlife Open or Close

It is time for our first safari! We head out at 5am and into the jungles of Kanha. This is among the best times in the year for wildlife spotting so keep those cameras ready! We will also have a naturalist and guide with us to help us better understand the animals we see during the safari.
We return from the safari at about 11:30am and go over everything that we learnt while we were out. Fresh from our first safari and with some practical knowledge under our belts, we learn about the field techniques for studying wildlife.
After lunch, we will be divided into groups for project work on different animals in the region.

Day 4
Visit to tribal village & Tribal Museum; Night Safari Open or Close

Today, we have an early morning birdwatching and photography session with the resident ornithologist. At the end of this 2 hour session, we return to the lodge in time for breakfast before heading back out to a tribal village.
At the village we will learn about the tribes who have lived in this region for 100s of years - their customs and traditions, their relationship with the animals that inhabit the land and the particular challenges they now face in terms of animal-human conflict.
After lunch, we go over to the tribal museum run by TCF for an afternoon of project work at the museum.
The evening is free before dinner.

Day 5
Project work & safari Open or Close

Begin the day with a visit to a local school where you will help the children practise English and continue their education in wildlife conservation.
After a quick lunch back at the lodge, discuss the conservation issues of Kanha Landscape before heading out for an afternoon safari.

Day 6
Nature walk, Studying Human-wildlife conflict, Project work Open or Close

Start the day with a nature walk with a local expert and learn more about the flora and fauna of the region.
Return to the lodge for breakfast followed by a discussion on Human-wildlife conflict in the region.
After lunch, we head back to the tribal museum to work with the local Gond artists and to finish our project at the museum.

Day 7
Safari & Local education Open or Close

The trip is nearly at an end and it is time for our final safari! We go back into the forest a 5am with the hope of spotting the tigers, leopards and other rich wildlife that Kanha has to offer one last time before we return.
After lunch, we meet with TCF experts to discuss everything we have learnt so far and to understand how our work has contributed to the projects here.

Day 8
Departure Open or Close

With the experience of a lifetime at an end, we leave early for the drive to the airport and our flights back home.

Flights must reach Raipur before 12noon on the day of arrival and depart after 6:30pm on the day of departure. 
Should you need it, we can assist you with booking extra night at the beginning of the trip. 


Q. What flights should I book? 
Flights are not included in your trip. When booking flights, please keep in mind that you need to arrive in Raipur before 12noon on day one. Should the connectivity from your destination not allow this, please arrange to arrive the night before. We can help you with the extra night accommodation.

The Internship Coordinator from Active Holiday Company will be in Raipur one day before the trip starts. 
Q. Will vegetarian food be easily available? 
The lodge has a choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food available for all meals. 
Q. Can specific dietary requirements be managed? 
Yes, they can. If you have any food allergies do let us know well in advance so we can plan the meals accordingly. 
Q. Can volunteers choose which activities they want to participate in? 
This trip is meant to expose volunteers to different experiences and the more you do, the more you will learn. All volunteers are expected to participate in all planned activities.

    The kanha tiger conservation internship

    Overall it was a very fascinating and productive trip as I learnt about a whole array of new facts and techniques that I had no idea I could learn.

    Most of my trip was an "ah ha" moment as I made a lot of new friends which were all very fun to be with at all times.
